Kitchen countertops take a beating. Day in and day out they withstand spills (page 5), appliances (page 4), and much more. While countertops made of seemingly solid materials such as wood, granite, marble, tile, seem extremely strong, everyday activities can cause them serious damage. Keep reading to learn how you may be destroying your countertops.
Not using a cutting board

“Fine scratches can disrupt the waterproof sealant on most countertops, making them more susceptible to damage down the road,” according to Bob Vila. For those with a butcher block countertop, foregoing a cutting board may be unwise because the finish of the wood becomes damaged over time. However, some people do choose to use knives directly on their butcher block counters.
Hint: Everyone is probably guilty of doing this.
Putting your keys on the counter

- Fun fact: Car keys are the most common item people lose, according to the Daily News.
Countertops are prone to scratches, which is why setting your keys on the counter is a bad idea. Don’t put handbags on counters either because they have bag feet — the metal dots on the bottom — that can scratch a countertop.
Softane. Hint: How groceries can ruin a countertop.
Leaving frozen food on the counter
- Fun fact: More than half of American households have frozen potatoes in their freezers, according to Prepared Foods.
Setting a bag of frozen food on the counter, even when unpacking groceries, isn’t a good idea. As with spills (page 5), the moisture from the frozen food can cause damage to countertops, according to Angie’s List. After unpacking groceries, wipe down countertops to prevent stains.
Hint: How your coffee maker could be destroying your counter.

- Fun fact: Theodore Roosevelt supposedly coined Maxwell House’s phrase, ‘good to the last drop,’ according to Maxwell House ads.
“Temperature changes can cause some materials to crack,” according to Bob Vila. When in doubt, create a barrier between the appliance and the counter with a dish towel, cutting board, or a plate. The same goes for hair straighteners or curling irons in bathrooms.
Hint: Why you should always use a coaster.
Not cleaning up spills
- Fun fact: Billions of gallons of liquid refreshments not including alcohol are sold in the U.S., according to Yahoo.
Spills are especially troublesome for granite, marble, and butcher block counters. Why? Because spills can penetrate the surface, according to the DIY Network. Clean up spills immediately and always use coasters. Leaving a spill can cause stains.
Hint: Think twice before doing this to your countertops.
Excessive weight

- Fun fact: Microwaves can weigh up to 70 pounds, according to Hunker.
“Placing heavy objects near unsupported edges or joints can cause cracks, ruptures, and fractures,” according to Bob Vila. Standing on a countertop to reach the top shelf of a cabinet isn’t a good idea. Neither is putting a heavy microwave on your counter.
Hint: Don’t use well-known cleaning agent on all counters.
Using the wrong cleaning supplies
- Fun fact: The average American spends $42 on cleaning supplies a month, according to the Statistic Brain Research Institute.
Using incorrect cleaning products can wreak havoc on the life of a countertop. Don’t use vinegar on granite or marble surfaces because, over time, the surface will be dulled, according to the DIY network. However, vinegar is a great cleaning solution for butcher block countertops.

Serial online eu. CALGARY -- It has been more than five months since Ryan Straschnitzki was together with his family in his hometown of Airdrie, Alta.
Straschnitzki, 19, was paralyzed from the chest down April 6 in a collision of the bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos hockey team and a semi-trailer north of Tisdale, Sask. The crash killed 16 people and injured 13 others.
After a month of physiotherapy treatment at the Shriners hospital in Philadelphia he returned home Wednesday to a bank of TV cameras and journalists at the Calgary International Airport.
'It feels good. I was just dropping down on the plane looking at the view -- it was nice. It brought back memories,' Straschnitzki said.
'I'm excited. It's been a while since I've been here and seen my friends.'
Straschnitzki was accompanied by his parents, brothers and sister who spent the past week with him in Philadelphia. He hasn't been in Airdrie with his family since earlier in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League season in February.
His mother, Michelle Straschnitzki, said it's wonderful for the family to be back home together.
'It feels awesome. It feels like its been so long coming and we're just going to take it one day at a time still but we're enjoying it,' she said.
'We do it in shifts right? We're on to the next period and we'll see what happens.'
Ryan said he wants to visit with family and friends, take a few days to rest and then attend the Calgary Stampede.
'I'm going to take my girlfriend to the Stampede and have some fun but then continue physio after that,' he said.
His father, Tom Straschnitzki, said the next stage of Ryan's recovery will be focused on him learning to do things on his own.
The first thing on the list is something he concentrated on in Philadelphia -- learning how to slide from his wheelchair into a vehicle.
'We're going to have a real car to do it tomorrow,' he said with a chuckle.
'I mentioned to him no more wheelchair accessible. You're on your own. We're going to do this.'
The family will be staying at a hotel in Airdrie, just north of Calgary, until renovations on their house to make life easier for Ryan are complete.
Ryan said he will be heading back to Philadelphia for a check-up in six months. For the time being he is a bit limited in what he can do.
'I feel a lot better, stronger,' he said.
